Review: Couple’s Guide to Sex Toys

The Adventurous Couple’s Guide to Sex Toys by Violet Blue is an incredibly detailed resource that anyone can use for inspiration and education about sex toys and sex-related products. Violet Blue is a prolific author of educational books about sexuality topics. This book is published by Cleis Press and includes a foreword by Charlie Glickman, who is a fantastic sex educator and presenter.

Blue provides a wonderful introduction to a range of topics that might be of interest to couples. From dildos and webcam shows, to hot wax and the Clone-A-Willy, this guide is incredibly informative. I thought this quote really laid out Blue’s intentions well when she wrote:

A good number of people think of sex toys only as solo tools for personal pleasure. Some even consider sex toy use by couples to be a signifier of things gone wrong, as if using a toy is akin to “cheating,” or as if getting pleasure from something other than the way a couple “should” be having sex is bad or doesn’t count. Or worse, that the couple are deviants or somehow perverted (in a bad way). But the truth is, a couple’s exploration of their shared sexuality through use of sex toys is a healthy sign of a relationship that grows, stretches, and changes with time. It’s a marker of a relationship with open communication, and it means that both parties are interested in deepening their intimacy and truly desire to make each other feel good. Blue has a wealth of information about sex toys to share, and I found myself bookmarking pages and taking note of what new things I wanted to try. What I love about this book is that it is useful for anyone looking for sex toys and products, and the information is presented in a thoughtful, inclusive way so as to reach the widest audience that it can. From single folks to long distance lovers, kinky couples to polyamorous groups, this guide book can be a fun and informative read. I really appreciated the advice given to long distance partners, because it included them in this discussion about getting off with your loved ones in creative, sometimes remote, ways.

The Adventurous Couple’s Guide to Sex Toys provides introductions to a variety of types of sexual activities and products that go along with them. Blue includes cleaning and safety information as well as a list of recommended resources. The illustrations in this book are excellent as well. I cannot wait to visit all of the sites Blue mentions in this guide to see for myself the wide range of products on the market. And to think I was well-informed prior to reading this book!
